Expertise and Insight When it Matters Most

When your child is diagnosed with a congenital heart or blood vessel disease, rare airway disorder or genetic syndrome, you face many complex decisions about treating and managing the condition. Whether they’re diagnosed as a baby in the womb, an infant, child, adolescent or young adult — there’s a lot to consider at every stage. We can help.

They come to us because we’re recognized researchers and national leaders who help set the standard of care for kids with heart disease. We regularly care for the rarest and most complex conditions, and our success rates are among the best in the nation.

Preparing for Your Child's Second Opinion

Getting a second opinion starts with one phone call: (302) 651-6600. You don’t need a doctor’s referral.

We’ll collect information about your child, like their medical history, your concerns and care journey. Generally, we may ask for:

  • Current or expected diagnosis
  • Diagnosing doctor’s name, address and contact information
  • Your address and contact information
  • Health insurance information
  • Results from tests, imaging or lab work
  • Written treatment plans, if available
  • Other records as needed

How Second Opinions Work at Nemours

Every week our heart and vascular specialists come together to review cases. Team members bring a highly specialized and focused area of expertise. Each has insight into the latest research and treatments available in their area.

Together, we develop an informed, shared opinion about the best path forward for your child.

Scheduling Your Child's Visit

After reviewing your child’s case, we may schedule a second opinion call, a video visit or an in-person visit to go over our recommendations. You may meet with one of our specialists to go over everything in detail.

During this process, we answer all your questions and empower you to make the best decisions for your child.

We provide a written summary of our recommendations that you can share with your child’s doctor. We’re available to consult with them as well.

Sometimes, we may recommend additional tests or exams. We’ll help guide you through the next steps.

Convenient Video Visits

In some cases, we can offer second opinion appointments through scheduled, live video visits. You can avoid waiting rooms and save travel time. Learn more about video visit at Nemours.
