Neuromuscular Orthopedic Care
Supporting Strength, Movement & Growth
At Nemours Children’s, our orthopedic specialists care for kids and young adults whose muscle or nerve conditions affect how they move and develop. These disorders can cause muscle weakness, joint stiffness, and bone changes that make daily activities more challenging. Our goal is to help every child stay active, comfortable, and independent, using the least invasive treatments possible.
We focus on the orthopedic side of neuromuscular conditions such as muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, arthrogryposis, and other nerve- and muscle-based disorders. We partner closely with specialists in neurology and rehabilitation to preserve mobility, prevent complications, and support long-term growth.
As part of award-winning orthopedics centers in Delaware and Florida, Nemours care is nationally recognized for excellence and certified by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). We work with some families before their baby is born and see young adults up to 35 years old. This deep experience and lifelong commitment mean we understand each patient’s unique needs and adjust care with their progress.
Every care plan reflects what your child needs to stay active and keep growing. We focus on alignment that eases discomfort and makes movement feel more natural.

Our Approach to Care
Children and young adults with neuromuscular conditions benefit most from collaborative, whole-person care. Our neuromuscular orthopedic experts coordinate with neurology, rehabilitation medicine, physical therapy, pulmonology, and nutrition to support every aspect of growth and mobility. We also work with genetic counselors, social workers, and adaptive equipment specialists to help families plan and manage care at home.
Nemours orthopedics is part of a larger network for children with neuromuscular conditions. We partner closely with our Neuromuscular Program team, and lead recognized Cerebral Palsy and Arthrogryposis programs. Together, we deliver coordinated, lifelong care for families.
Our Services
We help children, teens, and young adults with neuromuscular conditions through coordinated care that may include:
We follow children through each stage of growth to track how their muscles and bones develop. Our orthopedic specialists monitor hip, spine, and limb alignment to prevent problems like contractures, scoliosis, or hip displacement before they affect movement or comfort.
Whenever possible, we use nonsurgical treatments to help children maintain mobility and comfort. Treatments may include stretching programs, guided exercise, orthotic support, or serial casting to correct joint position and promote balance between muscles.
Neuromuscular conditions often cause postural changes and spinal curvature. We use bracing, physical therapy, and, when needed, spine surgery designed for children with muscle weakness or tone imbalance. We help kids sit taller, breathe easier, and move more freely.
We focus on maintaining joint flexibility and proper alignment in the arms and legs. For children with contractures or foot and ankle differences, care may involve stretching, guided-growth procedures, or bracing to improve stability and prevent pain.
Our Wilmington lab uses 3D cameras and pressure sensors to study how children move. This data helps us design precise braces and guide surgical planning. We’re able to help kids improve balance, coordination, and endurance.
Rehabilitation medicine and therapy teams help children build strength, flexibility, and coordination. We provide on-site orthotic fittings, adaptive seating, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids so kids can move safely and participate fully in daily life.
When surgery is needed, our pediatric orthopedic surgeons use growth-friendly, minimally invasive techniques to restore alignment and movement. Procedures may correct hip instability, spine curvature, or limb deformities while minimizing pain and recovery time.
